When the fairytale ended,
I stood at the castle gate
that did not exist
here in the middle of nowhere
that was everywhere-
and i looked up.
Because to look down would reveal
no ground beneath
and to look around would reveal
no world without
and to look within would reveal
nowhere i had never been-
but that i had never left-
that i had somehow lost,
What cannot be found.
But up.
Looking up is
as it always was-
we imagine ascending into the heights.
we ponder a walk in the clouds.
the formation of the birds,
or the plight of just one…
Up can expand,
where as down can fall
and surrounded feels contained-
too small,
or worse,
too massive to fill.
And in…
to look in
is to see where the dragon sleeps
and that we do so with one eye open-
fearing the breath of our own fire.
Knowing we are both to be slain
and slayer.
But to look up…
to imagine heaven beyond that blue,
or gray.
to simply imagine beyond-
seems so much safer,
than to delve within.
